About us
We are students of the grammar school of Jan Palach in Mělník. In the school year 2005/06, as a part of our Historical seminar, we decided to work on a project called „Neighbours Who Disappeared -Tribute to the Child Holocaust Victims“. We have worked for several months and we have learned a lot about Jewish history (including the holocaust), their traditions, customs and celebrations. Furthermore, we visited our local Jewish monuments. We were on a two-day excursion in Terezín Memorial. In adition, we went to the Jewish museum in Prague. We also saw a film by Matej Mináč – The power of Humanity and we participated a debate with him. During our school lecture we listened to the memories of a gypsy witness of the holocaust Mr. Hlaváček. This lecture was prepared by Live Memory. Finally, we are going to visit Auschwitz in September.
At the same time we also started searching for the blank pages of our school history, that is, the names of the students who were forced to leave the school for racial reasons. We found seven names; we searched for seven fates, seven faces. It was not an easy work because there were only a few witnesses and not all of them remembered exact information. We were also going through the Terezín memorial book and working with Yad Washem website. We found out that none of the seven students had survived. In the archives, we found registration cards in the list of the Jewish inhabitants.
At least we have some fragments of memories, their photographs and pictures of the places they lived in. Is it a lot or too little? We do not know. Nevertheless, we take these things as a certain debt which we have to pay.
